Our first summer intern

Traina Design recently launched our new internship program and had the pleasure of working with University of Texas at Austin student, Emily Rosenbaum. Emily is heading into her senior year as an advertising major with a focus in graphic design. As her internship comes to a close, we've asked Emily to share a little bit about herself and what she learned during her tenure as a design intern with the #trainacrew. Hear from her below:

Things I've Learned as a Summer Intern at Traina Design

  • This summer I was lucky enough to temporarily join the Traina Design family as their first intern. Over the past two months, I have gained invaluable insights, skills, and memories that will enrich my future as a graphic designer.
  • While the pen tool had always been a daunting and cruel part of Photoshop, I was finally able to tame the beast. This was definitely one of my shining moments.
  • When asking for help with Adobe suite functions, it's important to keep in mind there's at least three different ways to do one task. Each designer has his or her own process.
  • One of the great parts of interning at a studio was having the opportunity to gain diverse experience. I've been able to design a wide range of items for client projects, including magazine spreads, logos, and social media posts. I've interacted with clients, sitting in on meetings and observing how a brand evolves through the partnership. I've also attended a press check for the first time and fine-tuned my proofreading skills.
  • Adapting my time management from a college setting to a 9-to-5 job has been crucial for balancing the continuous flow of projects, each with a different deadline and difficulty level.
  • Throughout the summer, I've become more confident in my designs, and have learned to fight against my tendencies to overthink and doubt my work.
  • Lastly, I'm leaving TD knowing: I have been spoiled by the San Diego weather (and will soon be suffering); if there's a snack bar in the office, there is also no willpower; and, monthly company field trips are indeed very inspiring.

5 Random Facts About Me

  • I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and have been very (very) happy to not be in triple digit temps this summer.
  • My favorite website to get inspired by, or for creative procrastination', is thisiscolossal.com. I love the wide array of work they highlight, ranging from street art murals to technological innovations. The site is updated several times a day, so there are always new things to discover.
  • My dream vacation is to take a cooking tour across Italy. I'd love to visit before I forget my year's worth of Italian.
  • My favorite summer activity is doing absolutely nothing preferably on the beach, and with good company.
  • I'm in an avid love-hate relationship with Netflix and HBOGo. While (binge-) watching helps me relieve stress, it often backfires and causes me to neglect everything else in my life. The three of us are working on it
